Artist Statement I seek to provide a place for the viewer to find curiosity and appreciation for the process of creation. "Creativity is harnessing universality and making it flow through your eyes." – Peter Koestenbaum I love the challenge of creating detail in the light and dark values with each individual stroke and cross-hatching mark. Every detail of my subjects are examined and executed in a representational realistic style. I can apply ten to fifteen colors to build bold but yet sensitive color values. I work dark to light blending my colors to create a soft, feathered look, letting the characteristics of the paper come through to achieve the textured effect that has become the hallmark of my work. A sense of energy is important to me; so I pay great attention to the composition of the painting. It is in the dynamic relationship among the various components around a center of interest that creates vitality. I seek to build action into the line that directs the eye through the composition. Painting for me is a reacting, feeling situation where I experience an interaction between myself and the object, a circular flow of energy. When I am working I lose all sense of time and place. I experience a state of consciousness quite common among artists but nonetheless magical to me. It is being in the flow, engaged in a task that occupies me fully while freeing me to channel the creative gift. |
